Why Do We Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to legends, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the sandalwood paste on her body and assigned him the task of guarding her chamber. When Lord Shiva returned home, Ganesha blocked his way. Enraged, Shiva beheaded him.

Later, to pacify Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva brought Ganesha back to life by replacing his head with that of an elephant. Since then, Ganesha is worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity, and remover of obstacles.
